New Marine Carries on Family Tradition in Corps

“PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. – Only one long, narrow road leads on and off this island, an island shrouded in mystery. Young men and women come from across the country to venture down that road with only an inkling of what waits at its end.

For one new Marine, however, the marshes, sand fleas and constant hum of recruit training are nothing out of the norm, as this legendary island was once his home.

Pfc. Dylan Yagle is not as new to the Corps as one would believe seeing him among the hundreds of other fresh-faced Marines who graduated here Sept. 13, 2013. In fact, his father, Andrew Yagle, was once the highest ranking enlisted Marine on Parris Island, serving as the Marine Corps Recruit Depot’s sergeant major from June 2008 to July 2010….”

Historic Marine Base Housing Turns 100

“JOINT PEARL HARBOR – HICKAM, Hawaii — The former Marine Barracks Pearl Harbor Officers’ Quarters, which includes the historic home affectionately known as the “Chesty Puller House,” celebrated their centennial here, Sept. 15.

The Puller House is one of the three homes on Russell Avenue constructed in 1913, and was one of the first permanent structures on Naval Base Pearl Harbor and was part of Marine Barracks Pearl Harbor, the oldest Marine garrison in the state.

Unique in Hawaii for its Italian Renaissance style, the Puller House earned its nickname from former resident Lt. Gen. Lewis “Chesty” Puller, who lived there from 1948 to 1950 while he was a colonel in command of Marine Barracks Pearl Harbor….”

Marine Awarded for Saving Boy from Car Crash

“SYRACUSE, N.Y. — “It all just happened so fast. I didn’t think. I just reacted,” said Lance Cpl. Taylor Janis. “I really can’t describe it.”

Janis wasn’t referring to a combat experience. He was recalling the night when he risked his life to pull an 8-year-old boy named Matthew from a badly damaged vehicle.  The vehicle was involved in a head-on collision that claimed the lives of the boy’s mother, brother and a family friend, in addition to putting his 2-year-old sister in critical condition.

For his heroic actions, Janis, a light-armored vehicle crewman with Company E, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal Sept. 14 at his unit’s drill center in Syracuse, N.Y….”

Marine Shares Deployment With Daughter

“CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – It should come as no surprise that the selection of stuffed animals available in Afghanistan is limited — dolls aren’t exactly a hot commodity for Marines here.

Missing loved ones, however, is pretty much a universal sentiment.

The thought of being absent for yet another milestone in his daughter’s life led Marine Corps Sgt. Anthony Ortiz, a California native, to track down one such rare fluffy item and make a little extra space in his pack….”
