Closing in on ‘Holy Grail’ of MRE Options — Pizza

“WASHINGTON — Why aren’t there pizza MREs?

It’s a question troops have asked for as long as they’ve been eating Meals, Ready to Eat.

“Pizza is the holy grail of MREs because for decades, people have been asking for this,” said Paul DellaRocca, program integrator at the Defense Department’s Combat Feeding Directorate, which develops anything troops eat or cook with in the field. “If you give servicemembers a product that isn’t on the mark, he said, “they’re going to bite into it and not say, ‘This is pizza.’ That’s what we need them to say.”

The problem to this point has been that technology hasn’t been advanced enough to make sure the pizza actually tastes like pizza after three years in temperatures up to 80 degrees, according to military researchers. And how do you keep the sauce from soaking into the crust?..”

Marines Overseas Remember Beirut Bombing

“STUTTGART, Germany — “The force of the explosion initially lifted the entire four-story structure, shearing the bases of the concrete support columns, each measuring fifteen feet in circumference and reinforced by numerous one-and-three-quarter-inch steel rods.  The airborne building then fell in upon itself.”

This was the scene as described in Eric Hammel’s The Root: The Marines in Beirut, August 1982-February 1984, the authoritative source on the 1983 Beirut bombing. This scene claimed the life of 220 Marines, 18 Sailors and 3 soldiers, most killed as they slept in their racks. Of those who witnessed those nightmare events, two remain on active duty today…”

Heiress Charters Flight for U.S. Marine’s Dogs

“The great-granddaughter of the founder of Wrigley chewing gum chartered a private plane to transport a U.S. Marine’s dogs from California to North Carolina.

Helen Rosburg, the great-granddaughter of William Wrigley, said she decided to help out Andrew Morales after she saw a Facebook post explaining he and his family might lose their two dogs because they were too large for commercial airlines, ABC News “Good Morning America” reported Tuesday…”

Combat Engineer Becomes First Female ‘Gunny’

“CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Raised rough and tumble in the modest midwestern city of Mineral Point, Wis., Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Robin Baker came from an extended family dominated by males.

“I grew up running around and playing in the dirt like Indiana Jones,” Baker said. “It was a lot of exploring, running around, and sports. I definitely wasn’t afraid to get dirty. That’s for sure.”

It was a humble enough proving ground for the woman who would become a pioneer in one of the Marine Corps’ most male-dominated specialties.

Baker, a combat engineer with Combat Logistics Regiment 2, Regional Command-Southwest, pinned on the rank of gunnery sergeant in October, midway through her deployment to Helmand province, Afghanistan. She is the first female combat engineer to own the cherished Marine rank and title: “Gunny.”

She’s also not finished with coming in first…”

Corps Pulls Uniform Survey After Opposition

“The Marine Corps Uniform Board has pulled its survey of options for a gender-neutral dress and service cover after widespread negative reaction to one of the options, which has been slammed as “girly” and “appalling.”

On Thursday, several news outlets published stories  asserting that President Obama was trying to emasculate male Marines by forcing a change to their dress and service covers, and incorrectly wrote that men and women in the Marine Corps currently wear the same style of cover.

It all stemmed from a survey to active and Reserve Marines about the best option for a universal cover — a cap that would be worn by men and women. The manufacturer of the women’s “bucket cover” — which has a distinctly different shape than the men’s cover — is going out of business and will not continue to make the cap, according to the Marine Corps…”
