Bivy Review Roundup: Does Expensive Mean Good?

“When we decided to do reader reviews on military-style bivy shelters, we wanted to give the rest of our audience some insight on what amounts to be a substantial investment in snivel gear. We chose these three bivies because they were anything but cheap.

The Observer Plus, which retails for a little more than $700, features a duel-pole support system at the front opening and is extremely low profile. The Sabre SE, which averages about $500, has an inflatable, Airbeam support system, a large vestibule and light-signature reducing fabric. And finally, the IONOSPHERE, which costs about $200, is a roomy, well constructed shelter that will likely keep you well protected in foul weather…”

Marines Get Help with Data Overload

“The Office of Naval Research recently equipped Marines in Hawaii with special technology to help them sift through loads of data to find only the information they need for the battlefield.

ONR officials partnered with U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific Experimentation Center and the 3rd Marine Regiment for the third annual Agile Bloodhound demonstration Nov. 13–14 at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. PT Standards in Question for Women in Combat

“The Marine Corps may have to change its physical standards in order to put females in positions to one day lead infantry platoons in combat.

Both the Marine Corps and the Army continue to wrestle with the mandate that former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta issued in January, directing the U.S. military to open hundreds of combat-arms jobs that have been closed to female servicemembers.

So far, the Marines have been out ahead.

The service has opened up infantry training to female officers and enlisted Marines as part of an effort to gather data on how females and males compare when performing infantry and other combat-arms-related skills, and how those findings relate to current male and female physical fitness standards…”

Corps Names 4 EOD Marines Killed at Pendleton

“SAN DIEGO — The job is one of the most dangerous in the Marine Corps.

The four Marines killed Wednesday while clearing unexploded ordnance at California’s Camp Pendleton were bomb removal technicians. It is one of the few positions in which the Marine Corps allows team members to quit at any time. That’s because their mental focus could mean the difference between life or death, either for themselves or their fellow troops.

Few quit, despite the inherent risks that come with finding and getting rid of unexploded munitions — whether on the battlefield or on a U.S. base, according to former bomb technicians…”

More Marines and Ospreys to Philippines

“About 1,000 Marines from Okinawa were headed to the Philippines Friday to aid in the super Typhoon Haiyan disaster that has left hundreds of thousands desperately searching for food, water and shelter.

A week after Haiyan slammed into the central Philippines with gusts in excess of 200 mph, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Manila put the death toll at 3,631, while the United Nations said at least 4,460 had died.

Filipino officials said 12,487 had been injured and 1,187 were listed as missing, while the Red Cross said the number of missing could be as many as 25,000…”
