Marine Killed after Losing Control of Motorcycle

A New River Marine was killed this weekend after losing control of his motorcycle while doing a burnout, according to Highway Patrol reports.

Lance Cpl. Loron “Boogz” Joshua Melton, 24, of Jacksonville, was attempting a burnout on his 2004 Honda sport motorcycle in the parking area of Coastal Plains Raceway Park Saturday when he lost control of his vehicle, authorities said Monday.

After taking his motorcycle engine to around 7,000-10,000 revolutions per minute, he lost control of his bike and was propelled forward. Melton laid his motorcycle down on its left side before crashing into three parked cars and sliding underneath one of the vehicles…”

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — An ex-Marine was sentenced to death Thursday for murdering a fellow service member in 2009, after a federal jury concluded he had been responsible for a series of violent, sexually motivated attacks on women and young girls over the last nine years.

The jury deliberated for less than four hours before sentencing Jorge Torrez, 25, of Zion, Ill., to death for the murder of Navy Petty Officer Amanda Snell, a Las Vegas native, at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, in a barracks where both lived a few doors down from each other.

On the verdict form, the jury also unanimously concluded that Torrez also killed two young girls — 8-year-old Laura Hobbs and 9-year-old Krystal Tobias — in 2005 in his hometown of Zion, when he was just 16…”

Gunny Receives Navy Cross for Afghan Firefight

SAN DIEGO — A Marine now stationed at Twentynine Palms has been awarded the Navy Cross for “courageous leadership, composure under fire and tactical expertise” during a five-hour firefight with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Gunnery Sgt. Richard Jibson, 34, of Muskegon, Mich., received the award Tuesday during a ceremony at the sprawling desert base..”

Daniel Defense Embraces the Tactical Gray Craze

“Daniel Defense today unveiled its new Tornado gray finish intended for select rifle versions.

Call for NYC Parade for Iraq and Afghanistan Vets

Two years after veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq asked for a ticker-tape parade down New York City’s famous “Canyon of Heroes,” a senator said now the time is right with the Afghanistan war winding down.

“Now is the time to keep with long-standing American tradition and kick off a campaign for the first New York City welcome home parade for troops that served in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement Monday.

Schumer pointed out that several ticker-tape parades were held for returning World War II troops even while the war was going on. Vietnam veterans got a parade in 1985, 10 years after the U.S. ended its combat operations there, he said…”
