Marine Convicted of Murder in 2006 Killing of Iraqi Man

“Los Angeles Times | Jun 18, 2015 | by Tony Perry

REPORTING FROM CAMP PENDLETON — A Marine sergeant was convicted in a retrial Wednesday of killing an unarmed Iraqi man in 2006.

A six-Marine jury took a little more than three hours to convict Sgt. Lawrence Hutchins in what has become one of the most legally and politically complex courts-martial stemming from the Iraq war.

Hutchins faces a possible sentence of more than four years when the jury reconvenes Thursday to consider punishment. He could also be sentenced to time served, or anything in between.

Hutchins’ wife, Reyna, burst into tears when the jury’s verdict was read. Hutchins embraced her tightly and stroked her back.

Hutchins was also convicted of conspiracy and larceny but was acquitted of making a false report about the 2006 incident.

Under military rules, only four of six jurors’ votes were needed for a conviction. The actual vote was not revealed…”

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Army has the Green Berets, while the Navy is known for the SEALs. Now, an elite branch of the U.S. Marine Corps will officially be known as Raiders.

The Marines will rename several special operations units as Marine Raiders at a ceremony Friday, resurrecting a moniker made famous by World War II units that carried out risky amphibious and guerrilla operations. The exploits of the original Marine Raiders — who pioneered tactics used by present-day special forces — were captured in books and movies including “Gung Ho!” in 1943 and “Marine Raiders” in 1944.

The name will give a unique identity to the Marines’ branch of U.S. Special Operations Command, which includes special forces from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. The Marines’ Special Operations Command, known as MARSOC, was formed more than a decade ago as part of the global fight against terrorism…”

Mother Donates Son’s Medal of Honor to Smithsonian

“Lexington Herald-Leader | Jun 16, 2015 | by Greg Kocher

Marine Cpl. William Thomas Perkins Jr. documented history as a combat photographer. Now his posthumously awarded Congressional Medal of Honor will go to Washington, D.C., to document his role in the Vietnam War.

Perkins died at age 20 in 1967 when he hurled himself on a grenade to save the lives of three other Marines. On Monday, his mother, Marilane Perkins Jacobson, 89, of Lexington, donated some of her son’s effects to the National Museum of American History, part of the Smithsonian complex in the nation’s capital.

“I didn’t want them to end up in somebody’s brown box in a basement,” Jacobson said. “I figured he should go to the Smithsonian.”

Perkins was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor two years after his death. He was the first and only combat photographer to receive the nation’s highest military decoration. The 2nd Marine Division named a photographic lab for him.

Jacobson said the Medal of Honor was precious to her, “but I can’t take it with me. I’ve just been holding my breath and asking God to give me time to send that where it should be forever.”..”
