Marine Accused of Classified Leak Fighting Request for Claim Dismissal

“The Daily News, Jacksonville, N.C. | Sep 23, 2015

The fight over an alleged whistleblower reprisal for sending unlawful classified material to warn Marines of a potentially dangerous police chief in Afghanistan continued this week.

New York firefighter and Marine Reserve Maj. Jason Brezler, along with attorney Kevin Carroll, who represents Brezler pro bono for the firm Quinn Emanuel, was back in the U.S. Eastern District Court of New York on Monday. They were there contesting the U.S. government’s motion to dismiss Brezler’s whistleblower retaliation claim against senior U.S. Marine Corps leadership, according to an emailed statement from Carroll.

A decision should come within the next week or two, according to a former JAG officer.

“I doubt the judge would have ruled today,” former Marine Lt. Col. James Weirick said. “Likely there will be a written opinion issued by the court in the next 10 days or so.”..”

HONOLULU — The recently identified remains of a Marine hailed for his bravery in battle are heading home 72 years after he was killed on a remote Pacific atoll during World War II.

First Lt. Alexander “Sandy” Bonnyman died at age 33 while leading Marines against entrenched Japanese forces during a three-day fight for the strategically important island of Tarawa in 1943. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1947, but his remains weren’t found until earlier this year by a nonprofit organization called History Flight that has been searching for missing servicemen.

A bugler played taps and a color guard rendered honors for Bonnyman during a departure ceremony on Thursday in Honolulu. Bonnyman’s family plans to lay him to rest Sunday at the same Knoxville, Tennessee, cemetery where his parents were buried…”

Former Marine Shares Story to Raise Awareness for Suicide Prevention

“Marine Corps News | Sep 21, 2015 | by Lance Cpl. David Staten

DALLAS — As Jacob and David were walking into a 7-Eleven, a homeless man approached them begging for money. Jacob reached into his pocket, pulled out a five-dollar bill and gave it to the homeless man. When the man reached for it, Jacob maintained a tight grasp. The man suddenly turned and looked up at Jacob, holding the bill tightly.

Jacob looked him right in the eye and said, “I want you to know you’re worth it.”

As the homeless man walked toward the convenience store, he turned back and with an astonished look on his face said, “What did you say?”

Jacob pulled up his pant leg and revealed his prosthetic leg and said, “I want you to know what I did for this country is for you. You’re worth it, and you’re worth that money.”

“Life is about those 7-Eleven moments and you may never know the outcome but that’s not why you do it,” said David Vobora, founder of Adaptive Training Foundation…”

The Marine Corps infantry, Navy SEALs, and all other combat jobs in the Navy Department will open to women by the end of this year, and no exemptions to the new gender-neutral employment policy in the Defense Department will be granted despite results of a Marine Corps study on women in combat, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus reiterated during a speech Monday in Cleveland.

Mabus expanded on his earlier remarks criticizing the lengthy Marine Corps experiment that compared all-male combat units to ones that included women. The Marines released a four-page summary of results last week indicating that all-male units performed significantly better on 69 percent of tactical tasks, and female troops were injured at more than twice the rate as men.

“This study served a very good purpose. It’s come up with the standards, standards that have something to do with the job. Once you’ve done that I just see no reason to say ‘because the average person, woman, cannot meet these, we’re not giving anybody a chance,'” Mabus said.

“We’re not looking for average. There were women that met this standard, and a lot of the things there that women fell a little short in can be remedied by two things — training and leadership.”..”

WASHINGTON — The Marine Corps is expected to ask that women not be allowed to compete for several front-line combat jobs, inflaming tensions between Navy and Marine leaders, U.S. officials say.

The tentative decision has ignited a debate over whether Navy Secretary Ray Mabus can veto any Marine Corps proposal to prohibit women from serving in certain infantry and reconnaissance positions. And it puts Gen. Joseph Dunford, the Marine Corps commandant who takes over soon as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at odds with the other three military services, who are expected to open all of their combat jobs to women.

No final decisions have been made or forwarded to Pentagon leaders, but officials say Defense Secretary Ash Carter is aware of the dispute and intends to review the Marine plan. The Marine Corps is part of the Navy, so Mabus is secretary of both services…”
